Jojoba oil comes from a perennial, evergreen plant said to grow in areas of the Americas and Africa.
According to author James A. Duke, in Handbook of Nuts: Herbal Reference Library, historic people of Mexico are said to have used the plant’s medicinal powers to improve skin’s overall health, hair’s strength, and even to treat cases of cancer.
“Jojoba seeds, which are rich in liquid wax, were used in folk medicine for diverse ailments,” writes one study, published in the National Center for Biotechnology Information. ”
The 2005 study also found that jojoba oil had astounding anti-inflammatory effects.
“Results showed that JLW caused reduction of carrageenin-induced rat paw oedema in addition to diminishing prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) level in the inflammatory exudates,” the study writes.
In other words, jojoba oil’s distinct anti-inflammatory properties have been proven to reduce redness and swelling associated with signs of infection, or inflammation. It may also help certain types of inflammation clear up faster than they normally would on their own.
Benefits of Jojoba Oil for Skin
According to the publication, Perth Now, jojoba oil has many benefits for skin, and can act as a deep-tissue moisturizer.
“…jojoba oil absorbs this down into the layers of the skin. It is cheap and effective,” says the publication.
Jojoba oil is able to penetrate the skin quickly, according to sources, because it closely resembles the composition of our own skin’s sebum. Sebum is the oily layer covering skin, which helps keep in moisture and protect underlying skin tissue. If there is an imbalance in sebum production, this can cause pores to become clogged, or infected, which leads to symptoms of acne.
On the opposite end of that spectrum, too little sebum can cause a person to have a lackluster appearance, because sebum provides skin with its elasticity, and supple qualities.
“It can also be used to eliminate excess sebum and accumulation from the hair. It is anti-bacterial, anti inflammatory, non toxic which makes it incredibly useful for the hair, face and the whole body,” writes the site Gray Hair Solutions.
With so many versatile qualities, jojoba oil benefits just about every skin type!
